Fernando is co-director (non-executive) at Instituto Maria e João Aleixo (IMJA) and Reader (Community Education) at University of Dundee. He is a founding member of the Observatory of Favelas (Brazil). Fernando has been working, since 2001, in the interface between urban development, violence and human rights, with special interest on issues related to institutional racism and practitioner attitudes in public services. Other key areas of interest include peripheral/Global South epistemologies and creative approaches to research.
