Introduction
MIDEQ’s work in the digital technologies thematic area aimed to contribute towards migrants’ well-being and empowerment through shared knowledge dissemination on safe, secure and wise use of digital technologies. Working with migrants, international organisations, migrant organisations and tech companies, the team in South Africa implemented two main Impact Interventions. The first was a series of videos for migrants by migrants. These focused on topics relevant to migrant communities ranging from the safe use of digital tech to lifestyle matters relevant to their communities. The team also developed training resources on the safe, wise and secure use of digital technology, tailoring the materials to the South African context.
The Impact Interventions reflect key findings that emerged from research conducted by the digital technologies work package, supported by the MIDEQ team in South Africa, the University of Cape Town. Using an initial online survey, the team found that many migrants still have limited knowledge on how to use digital tech to its full potential, in particular, through their mobile phones. Thus, both interventions address a gap in digital skills training. The interventions equipped migrant communities with information on how to use technology safely while also building technical skills in video editing and content creation.
