The Americas secretariat

The Americas secretariat has been in the making since the regional conference on Transit Migration hosted in San Jose, Costa Rica, in February 2024. The secretariat was officially established in summer 2024 and is led by the Interuniversity Institute for Research and Development (INURED) in Haiti. Three face-to-face meetings have been hosted to date in Haiti, Mexico and Brazil as well as an online session to promote inclusion.

The goal of the Americas secretariat is to establish a structure for collaboration between community-based activists, leaders, academics and policy makers around issues of migration in the Latin America and Caribbean (LAC) region. The Americas secretariat will undertake activities including, but not limited to, joint publications on regional issues in migration, development of educational materials for primary through tertiary educational levels, the development and the dissemination of artistic works on migration. The Americas secretariat endeavours to support the work of migrant-serving community-based organizations across the region through grant writing and fundraisers. The secretariat has prioritized identifying existing resources within the network that can be leveraged to attract new members. As part of this effort, Americas secretariat members have contributed to the development of the Virtual Museum of Migration and Mobilities donating short films and curricula on issues related to migration, development and (in)equality. The secretariat has identified funding opportunities to pursue in the upcoming months to support the administration of the network and future projects.
